There are many types of group therapy. Group psychotherapy or group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists treat a small group of clients together as a group. There are differences to be found between group analysis, group psychotherapy and groups that are therapeutic. In group therapy, patients can benefit from seeing the challenges of other team members. Some patients may continue treatment after group therapy ends, either individually or in another group setting.

Through group interactions and group feedback, new insights are gained, alternative behaviors or thoughts are explored, and new ways of relating to others can be tried. The team members benefit from this experience, from the opportunity to talk about their problems and express their feelings and mutual support. Many group members find that when the team feels safe enough to share what they are most apprehensive about, the group can be very helpful and affirming. Almost without exception, within a few sessions, new members find that the group process draws them in, and they begin to share with the panel in ways they never anticipated. Process groups provide an environment for students to identify and explore emotions, give and receive support, and practice healthy ways of relating to others.

In groups that follow this model, the emphasis is placed primarily on current interactions occurring between and among team members. For example, an organization that focuses on changing the individual will also have an impact on the group’s interpersonal relations and the group‐as‐a‐whole. Even though group psychotherapy frequently focuses on participants with severe problems, the scope of group psychotherapy is extremely broad.

Group therapy helps people work through problems by interacting with a therapist and a group of individuals with similar struggles. Support groups and group therapy are both led by a trained therapist, whereas in self-help groups, a professional is usually not present. Additionally, there are addiction oriented and self-help groups, which are not traditional therapy groups. SelfHelp Groups though not traditionally considered a form of group therapy, these groups are usually led by team members, not trained professionals, and often view eating disorders as types of addictions. Group therapy allows individuals in treatment to relate to others who have experienced and are experiencing many similar things.
