Create Different Moods
You can choose music to create different moods and when the kids need to blow off some steam and its awful weather outside or are in need of calming down it is very useful to have just the right piece of music to play for that particular purpose. My favorite minimalist music for relaxing is Harmonielehre by American composer John Adams. Music can help you get “into the zone” when practicing yoga, self-hypnosis or guided imagery, can help you feel energized when exercising and recover after exercising, help dissolves the stress when you’re soaking in the tub. Paradoxically, though, if I play just the right kind music, I’ll sleep like a baby.
Classical Music Playlist
If you think back to your childhood, there will be songs and music which you associate with the best things you remember. I listen to music all day while writing, and regularly add new songs if I think they fit the playlist well. Interestingly enough, while I do find most pieces on the classical music playlist to be calming, I believe that’s a result of the host arranging a playlist that appeals to what a general audience perceives as what classical music should sound like. For people like myself—highly sensitive to noise and unable to tune out bad background music—the experience can be excruciating.

I am so grateful for those who attend and listen to performances which have no musical background these are those who are often most edified, impressed and moved by the truly remarkable power of pure music. I have developed a greater respect for people who don’t play classical music who listen to it and attend concerts because I appreciate their devotion and interest. Beyond what’s played on the radio, there is a world of complex, intense, cacophonous, dramatic, edgy, avant-garde, and even violently animated orchestral music that is by far NOT RELAXING. People who play musical instruments and music tend to listen to more classical music than those who do not. Insomnia affects millions of people worldwide with many individuals turning to medications to help them sleep.
